Yalumba is a well-known, highly respected Australian vintner that produces some mighty fine wine at some mighty fine prices. For the same reason that Chevy and other car makers produce a wide range of vehicles from the inexpensive to the other end of the scale, Yalumba began producing an inexpensive, entry-level, introduction-to-the winery label: The Y Series. The concept: Try it somewhat painlessly and you’ll surely want to try the next level for a bit more money. That’s a good concept, to be sure, but one that, in this case, has gone very, very wrong; kind of like Chevy selling new Corvettes for $9,000 in hopes you’ll buy a Chevy Spark for $15,000: AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN! So, how good is the wine? Here’s what Christina Packard had to say, writing in Wine Enthusiast and awarding the wine 92 points: “Yalumba's everyday reds tend to have a brightness and approachability about them, and this latest Cab doesn't disappoint. The nose is a lovely combo of currant and red berry backed by graphite, eucalyptus and large helpings of spice. It's bone-dry and cinched by raspy tannins, the fruit taking a back seat to lovely layers of texture and tannin. It's an excellent intro to South Aussie Cabernet. Drink now–2028.” Admittedly, Wine Enthusiast reviews don’t always sync with those issued by the more-respected publications, but – in this case – the review matches others. Others’ comments: “A fruit forward, very dry and satisfying wine at a great price point. Excellent value wine.” And “The Y series is the entry level into Yalumba wines and they're doing things well. This cab sav packs a punch for a cheap price and should be the house cab for any restaurant.” Also “Dark plum red with a crimson hue in color, this lively, fresh Cabernet Sauvignon displays cassis and satsuma plum combined with the intriguing aroma of rain on fresh foliage. The sweet fruit palate of plum and berry compote combines well with the natural tannin structure that this variety is known for. A lovely match for this wine is traditional or vegetarian homemade lasagna.” (Rain on fresh foliage? Really?) So here’s the killer: As little as $8.99/bottle (Back up the truck!!!) with loads of stores selling it for sub $10.
